In 1997, Craigmore Christian School joined a cluster of schools to form the Gawler Region Employment, Education and Training group (GREET), with the aim of initiating a Vocational Education and Training (VET) program in our School. Vet programs establish partnerships with Registered Training Organisations and TAFE to provide students with up-to-date and nationally accredited training in vocational areas. Essentially this will mean that students will receive TAFE credit for some of their studies in the Senior School. Students are also provided with the opportunity to participate in a structured work placement where an employer agrees to provide some on-the-job training and this is linked into their school studies as well. The employer benefits because they are able to pass on knowledge and skills in the context of their work situation and therefore gain a pool of skilled prospective employees, if and when the need arises.
A work placement coordinator counsels students ensuring that the correct student is placed in the appropriate workplace environment. Contact with and feedback from the student and the employer aims to maintain open lines of communication to ensure a smooth work placement. Students receive assessment in specific skills both on-the-job and back at school and these are recorded in a Log Book to enable credit to be given both in the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and TAFE.
Students benefit by:
· Gaining confidence and better communication skills through learning in an adult environment and enhancing problem-solving in a real work situation
· Learning skills relevant to the workplace
· Having a focus on the purposes of learning, both those students looking at training and work, and those planning to go on to further education
· Gaining a knowledge of the workplace and expectations of employers
· Learning skills in the workplace that often help in other areas of study
· Being involved in an interesting and practical course of study that can lead to great enthusiasm and motivation
· Making contact with employers, which may lead to future employment.
· Receiving accreditation from SACE, industry, TAFE and other private providers.
Computing, Information Processing, and Engineering are currently subjects with a VET focus.
